/r/GetMotivated a Community To Help You Reach a New Level

In my previous blog posts, I explained how use the motivation that you found from within yourself. I have mentioned using exercise as your own form of catharsis, to overcome your fears, listening to music that you enjoy, and to find intrinsic motivators that you value. Those posts have explained how you find the motivation by yourself but others can help you find it for you. Whether it may be family, friends, or in this case, complete strangers from the internet.

Allow me to introduce you to reddit.com. In general (as it is difficult to explain) it is a very large forum and social bookmarking website that in which its members share various forms of media within the Reddit community. In terms of the social bookmarking aspect, pictures, videos, articles, pages, etc. are shared constantly and in term of the forum aspect, discussions are conducted, questions are asked and answered, and debates ravage through the website. It is a very lively and active community. Reddit is split in sections/topics which in Reddit jargon are referred to as “subreddits”. And within Reddit jargon, each subreddit begins with a “/r/” as reference to the URL. There are subreddits for funny content (/r/funny), fitness (/r/fitness), section to ask questions, holidays (/r/askreddit), cute pets and animals (/r/awww), your university or college (/r/humber, etc), and bananas (/r/banana…seriously). The list continues as Reddit members are given the freedom to openly create their own subreddit to whatever topic that they desire. In this case, I will discuss a reddit called /r/GetMotivated.

The /r/GetMotivated subreddit is what the name showcases: An area where people can discover different sources to become motivated. It has a fairly simple setup whether you are an experienced “Redditor” or a newcomer, you can find different media, links, and articles to help you in your search for motivation.
  • If you enjoy visuals, motivational posters are by far the most submitted form of media into the subreddit. Most of the posters that make it to the front page of that subreddit are generally really helpful and inspiring.
  • If you don’t like pictures, videos are constantly being posted as well which features many motivational bits from film, athletes performing, and speeches either compiled and edited together or separately posted in its entirety
  • The community interaction is very active here as well. There is a weekly “motivation suggestion” discussion thread, members from other subreddits turning to r/GetMotivated for some inspiration and existing members presenting their achievements and giving their thanks to GetMotvated
  • The side bar provides links that may be of interest that can be found with r/GetMotivated such as The Top Motivational Videos
  • The side bar also includes suggestions to other subreddits which focuses on much more specific topics such as /r/MotivatedMusic, /r/StopSmoking, /r/GiveMe40Days
I found this community to be surprisingly helpful and useful in achieving my goals. There are plenty of communities in the internet that can help you reach your goal, this is just one of them, and with many things that deal with motivation, you just need to find the one that works best for you.

Thanks for reading this week’s blog post! This is definitely one of the longer blog posts that I have done in this blog. But it is because I feel so strongly for this community as I have been a “Redditor” for a year and a half and I feel gracious to have found it. Make sure to connect with me in my Pinterest, YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter under the name HealthMotivates and in Fitocracy under my personal username EJlogic. Come back next week for another motivational blog post!
