Working Out to Live Music: The Cheers of Millions of People

I have mentioned multiple times in my blog the usefulness when listening to music during your workout or having someone cheer you on throughout your workout such as a workout buddy. But you probably did not realize that you can use both simultaneously to unlock a new way to motivate yourself in a workout!

To recap, I stated that by listening to music, it can take you to a realm or an environment where you are most comfortable. You are listening to whatever you want to listen, while eliminating all noises around you, and you have full control in what you would like to and what you would not like to hear.

In terms of having someone cheer for you, I had both friends root for me and complete strangers in the gym either come up to me and say, “Good job” or even cheer me on while I struggle for that last rep. In both situations, as you can imagine, made me feel energized and in high spirits knowing that there are people who want me to succeed.

What if you workout in the morning or late at night where there are more fingers in your hands than there are people in the gym and all you have are your earphones? Your friends are too lazy to go to the gym the same time as you and you expect none of the strangers to give you a pat in the back or a high five. How can you possibly find a way to use the methods I mentioned above?

A solution I found effective was to simply use live music. You can use the live performances of your favorite artists that you would usually listen during your workout while hearing the roaring cheers of a stadium full of fans! If you agree with me that having just 1 person cheering for you is satisfying enough, imagine what it feels having hundreds of thousands of screaming people cheer for you as you lift some seriously heavy weight. Of course, it will take some manipulation to tell yourself that they are cheering for you instead of the artist, but if you have gone as far as timing your workouts to every chorus of each song, telling yourself that the hoard of fans going bonkers for you should not be a problem.

A great recent example is the newest Swedish House Mafia music video released September 14, 2012 in which they showed footage of their last UK concert. The crowd’s roar along with the electric sound (which some may or may not like depending on your taste) is a great formula for exercising while listening to a live performance.

My personal favorite is the live performance of No Reason by Sum 41. Every time I listen to this performance, it feels as if my batteries are recharged and I just want to jump around like a psycho rabbit on Red Bull. I’m serious.
